Congressional Democrats fundraising totals
Sun Jul 20, 2008 at 08:35:26 PM PDT
This is from the FEC website up to the end of the second quarter (June 30). A lot of Democrats are doing very well in fundraising.
The first figure posted is the total as of June 30, the second figure posted in brackets is as of March 31, the third figure is December 31. I posted both so you can see how well they did in the quarter. If no previous number has been posted it's because the candidtate hadn't entered at that date.
I've broken the candidates down into a few categories, they are strictly my opinion. This is just House candidates, not U.S Senate candidates.
Scrutinizing Obama's weaknesses
Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 11:36:22 PM PDT
I hope nobody thinks I'm a Republican troll for posting this. We're supposed to be the side that believes that honest criticizm is patriotic and the right thing to do.
I hadn't thought about this, but a Republican troll in some discussion blog brought it up and, after thinking about it for a few minutes, I thought he might actually have a point.
It seems that Obama is somebody who, at least at times, can be rolled.
1.He refused to wear a flagpin, calling it 'false patriotism' or 'cheap patriotism'. It was brought up in that sham of a debate, and now he wears one.
2.He was going to stand by his church. He took a bit of extra heat over it, and then he quit.
3.McCain bashes him for not going to Iraq, now it seems he's planning to go some time in the summer. (maybe Obama was always planning to go, and it was a false charge to begin with, I don't know)
4.He makes it a point of pride to ignore Fox 'News'. They bash him over it, and suddenly he's on the Chris Wallace Show.
I don't know if this would even be much of a campaign issue, but it is actually maybe something to worry about should he get elected President. If he folds over these things, how will he stand up to the Republican loudmouths in Congress?
Congressional Democrats fundraising totals

This is from the FEC website up to the end of the first quarter. The numbers have been there for awhile but I just got around to checking them out. A lot of Democrats are doing very well in fundraising.
The first figure posted is the total as of March 31, the second figure posted in brackets is as of December 31. I posted both so you can see how well they did in the quarter. When only one number is posted it's as of March 31. No previous number would be posted in most cases because the candidate hadn't entered the race as of December 31.
I've broken the candidates down into a few categories, they are strictly my opinion. This is just House candidates, not U.S Senate candidates.
A Call for Congressional Candidates
Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 06:52:45 PM PDT
The deadline to file to run for Congress is in April in the following states and we still need candidates: Tennessee, Alabama, New Jersey, Virgina. To be sure, I can't find reports of who has filed in those states, but checking the information from the reliable sources (Swing State Project, politics1), nobody has filed for the following districts:
Tennessee (filing deadline April 3)
1.Tennessee 2
2.Tennessee 3
3.Tennessee 7
Alabama (filing deadline April 4)
1.Alabama 6
New Jersey (filing deadline April 7)
1.New Jersey 2
Virginia (filing deadline April 11)
1.Virginia 1
Let's leave no Wingnut unchallenged!
My take on the DCCC 2008 target list
Sun Mar 23, 2008 at 09:20:52 PM PDT
Though I don't think I know more than the people who live in the district, I've been analyzing the Congressional races from the start of the cycle. I realize that the Democrats have limited resources and cant' target everywhere, but I think there are some more districts that merit consideration.

Congressional Special Election candidates
Fri Mar 07, 2008 at 07:15:27 PM PDT
There are 6 special elections coming up in the next few weeks/months. 4 of them are previous Republican held seats, 2 of them Democratic. The Saturday Illinois 14 race is mentioned on the front page. However, I don't think the special elections have received as much attention as they should have. There have been no mention here of the 2 Louisiana special election primaries also on Saturday or of the Indiana special election on Tuesday.
There has been too much with the presidential primaries which divide us, and not enough on defeating Republicans which unites us!

Texas Congressional Candidates and predictions
Mon Mar 03, 2008 at 07:25:45 PM PDT
Along with some other insignificant race in Texas (the Presidential primary :D), the Congressional races are tomorrow. Keep in mind, these are just my predictions, I'm not saying who I'd prefer to see win, and I'm not an expert on any of the races, so I could easily be wrong. My record of predictions so far in the previous Congressional races in Illinois and Maryland is 21 out of 30.
Good luck to all the candidates.
Science heads up/warning: Evolution 'debunker' Mark Mathis on Coast to Coast tonight
Sat Mar 01, 2008 at 02:29:24 PM PDT
From Coast to Coast website: Film Producer of Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, Mark Mathis will discuss his years researching how academia has completely excluded any views other than the Darwinian explanation of how life began.
He will be on from 11PM to 2AM Pacific Time.
Phone numbers to call in and rebut his arguments are here:
http://www.coasttocoastam.com/...
Coast to Coast claims to have anywhere from 2 to 10 million listeners a night in the United States, so this isn't just some small dog and pony show.

The campaign against McCain
Sat Feb 23, 2008 at 09:38:10 PM PDT
I think there are two components to the 'negative' campaign against John McCain. Tie him to George W. Bush and go after his history of poor judgement.
First, about negative campaigning. I don't have a problem with candidates scrutinizing the character and the records of their opponents. That, as far as I'm concerned, is part of what campaigns are supposed to be about. Where is goes over the line is when candidates engage in distorting or telling outright lies about there opponents, such as the Swift Boat liars.
New Reuters/Zogby poll: Obama jumps to big lead over Clinton
Wed Feb 20, 2008 at 05:15:44 AM PDT
New Reuters/Zogby poll
Obama 52%
Clinton 38%
Obama 47%
McCain 40%
McCain 50%
Clinton 38%
http://www.reuters.com/...
We'll see if this is confirmed by other polls. I don't know much about the credibility of Reuters/Zogby. The presidential poll numbers are consistent with other numbers I've seen, although Hillary Clinton is certainly trailing McCain by a bigger margin than in most other polls.
I wouldn't normally post a poll without much comment, but I thought it would make for an interesting way to start the day.
Anybody know when the other polls are supposed to come out?
Obama can be transformative, Hillary probably can't

This diary is informed by the opinions of Newsweek's Fareed Zakaria and the compiler of the Rating the President's series (I keep forgetting his name, he was on the KGO on President's day on the John Rothman show which I diaried earlier).
Zakaria's view is that Hillary Clinton is too much afraid of Republican attacks to act boldly. http://www.newsweek.com/...
KGO Radio Show Host President's Day Special tonight
Sat Feb 16, 2008 at 03:59:55 PM PDT
KGO is a radio station in San Francisco. The Host is John Rothman who is a presidential and vice presidential historian. He is a self described liberal Democrat who, as a young man, worked for a while in the Nixon Administration before resigning over Nixon's actions.
His show tonight, from 1 AM to 6 AM Pacific Time will discuss politics, but it will also focus on various former Presidents with commentary and sound clips (In addition to being a historian Mr Rothman is an archivist with sound clips of Presidents going all the way back to Grover Cleveland on wax recordings).
The highlight of the program occurs in the 5-6 AM hour when the compiler of the series "Rating the Presidents" (I forget the fellow's name) will appear on the show. As a historian, John Rothman is one of those asked to rank the presidents, and he has voted George W. Bush as the worst president of all time.
You can listen to the broadcast at: http://www.kgoam810.com/
If you can't listen live, KGO now archives their broadcasts for a week:

Dissecting John McCain's stump speech
Fri Feb 15, 2008 at 06:49:56 AM PDT
Despite the attempts to 'demonize' him here and elsewhere, I mostly still like John McCain. However, I also believe in due dilligence and a proper analysis of views, so I want to go over what he says. I'd appreciate other people to throw in their analysis of his speech.
I normally don't care for diaries where the poster cuts into speeches and makes often snarky comments, so I hope to keep my comments as clinical as possible. I'm not a political scientist but an economics student, so I my primary interest is economics, but don't think I'm a naif and I like to think I know pablum when I hear it.
Mississippi, West Virginia and Kentucky Congressional candidates
Thu Feb 14, 2008 at 04:32:40 PM PDT
I've previously posted the Illinois, Maryland, Ohio and Texas list of candidates. The primaries have been held in Illinois and Maryland. Ohio and Texas primaries are March 4, the same day as the presidential primaries.
Ohio is here: http://www.dailykos.com/...
Texas is here:

BTW, in other Congressional candidate news CQpolitics reported New Hampshire Democratic Senate candidate Jay Buckey dropped his bid. I'm surprised I haven't seen that mentioned here.
